Offering private lessons in guitar, banjo, uke and voice in the NY Metro area

Thumbtack Best Pro of 2015
In addition to performing & recording, I offer private lessons in acoustic guitar, banjo, uke and voice lessons in New York City. I work with adults as well as children, and people of all levels and abilities.

If you are arriving at this page from a Google search, without having stopped at my homepage, below is a brief bio:

I have been playing guitar since age 11 and banjo since age 17. I have a degree in music from SUNY-Stony Brook (I majored in Classical Guitar) with a year spend studying music at King's College, London and Trinity College of Music, London.

At college, I studied and then taught at the seminal music school The Guitar Workshop of Roslyn, NY. I had the privilege of working as a clinician for Martin Guitars in the early 2000's and travelled with the CEO, CF Martin IV, to Europe and Asia. Bob Dylan's publishing company signed as a writer early on in my career. I have toured the college market, played overseas, headlined cruise ships, folk venues and other clubs across the U.S, etc. I have a wide repertoire to work from and teach both adults and children. I also have a channel at Youtube.com. that has performance and teaching videos.

I welcome the opportunity to discuss how I can help you achieve your music goals. I have many satisfied students who would be happy to give you a testimonial.

Guitar styles taught: classical, flat-picking, finger-style. Basic rock guitar rhythm licks and leads.

Banjo styles taught: frailing, double-thumbing, old time 3-finger picking, basic bluegrass.

Ukulele: learn chords and how to read tab; be able to accompany yourself in a variety of styles (strumming and fingerpicking).

Lessons generally include some music theory. I can use tablature, or if you want to learn to read music, I can write out pieces for you.

The price of a lesson runs from $40-75/hour with an average of $60 per hour ( minimum lesson length is 30 minutes). Due to my touring and performance schedule, it is possible to schedule bi-weekly lessons. I'm pretty flexible, but I do require 24 hours notice for any cancellation; otherwise you are responsible to pay for the lesson.

I teach on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, but travel to your home is available for an extra fee. Video lessons via Skype are also possible. Currently (2017-2018) I am teaching Uke at the 92nd Street Y School of Music. We are going to add a banjo class at some point. I also run slow jams for beginning and low intermediate students who need a nurturing environment in which to play collectively and jam.
