A Child ballad (#278) known as “The Farmer's Curst Wife”. Only a shrewish woman can stand up to the Devil, it seems. The well known folk musician John McCutcheon claims to have added the last verse although it’s related to other endings.

The Devil And The Farmer's Wife

Well there was an old man living up on the hill
If he ain't moved away, he's a livin' there still
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

The Devil he came to the farmer one day
said "One of your kin I'm gonna take away"
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

"Well please don't take my eldest son
There's work on the farm that's gotta be done"
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

"But you can have my nagging wife
By God, she's the curse of my life"
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

So he threw the old lady over his back
and he headed down the road witha clickety clack
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

He put her down at a fork in the road
said "By God lady, you're one hell of a load"
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

Well he carried her down to the gates of hell
Said "Stoke up the fire boys, we'll roast her well"
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

Come along a little devil with a ball and a chain
She upped with her foot and knocked out his brain
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

Two little devils come peeking round the door
She up with her elbow killed 10 more
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

A hundred little devils come a climbing up the wall
Said "take her back daddy she'll murder us all"
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

Well the Farmer upped and he looked out a crack
said "Oh my god he's a bringing her back!"
Hi diddle ai diddle ai fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

Well the farmer he crawled up under his bed
But she yanked him out by the hair on his head
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

"Well here's your wife I hope she's well,
If I'd a kept her any longer, she'd have ruined hell"
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

"Well I've been a devil most all of my life
But I never been in hell til I met your wife"
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day

Guess this proves that the women are stronger than the men
To go down to hell and come back again
Hi diddle ai diddle hi fi, diddle ai diddle ai day
